Some few years ago, Ultimate Ears gave us the Wonderboom – a little speaker that provided us with excellent sounds at an attractive price. With some great colors and easy to manage controls, there were a ton of reasons to love the speakers. But despite this, the Wonderboom still had a lot of room to grow.
Now, the company’s ready to give you a follow-up to their popular speaker, the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 2 launched earlier this summer. It is a product that is small and compact enough for exceptional portability but is also big enough for producing big, quality sounds. Of course, Ultimate Ears’ Wonderboom 2 gives everyone an appealing combination of notable features and a reasonable price.
Now does the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 2 perform better than its predecessor? Or did they only focus on aesthetics without looking further on its functionality? Today we’re going to check out this speaker from Ultimate Ears and see if it’s something worth purchasing.
First up, let’s check out what’s inside the box.
Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 2 Review – What’s in the Box?
Our Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 2 came in a sturdy and durable cardboard package which is something we love. We won’t have to worry about any damages on the speaker since Ultimate Ears always guarantees the protection and safety of their products.
On the front portion of the box, you will find an image of the speaker itself, while the company’s name is on the upper-left corner of the box. The lower-left portion displays the product’s name, and its highlighted feature which is the “outdoor boost”. Underneath these, you will find details about the speaker being a portable Bluetooth device.
The left part of the box displays an image with people having fun, while the bottom portion shows words describing the speaker: “surprisingly big sound” and “outdoor boost”. For the right part of the box, you will see another image of the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 2 thrown into the water. Below, other words are describing the speaker, such as waterproof and floats. The back of the package shows more details about the speaker as well as other essential features it offers.
Inside the box, you will find the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 2, and the one that we have comes in the Radical Red shade. We love how vibrant and premium the speaker looks; plus, it also has a sturdy build which makes it even better. Aside from the speaker, the package also includes a micro-USB cable for connecting.
Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 2 Review
When comparing the physical aspect of the original Wonderboom with the Wonderboom 2, you’d notice a few visual differences between the two. The new model has the same form factor as the original, but it’s larger than the other.
The latest model has a build made from mesh fabric like before, yet it features a brand new two-toned knit weave. Aside from this, its multifunction button located at the top portion of the speaker is more evident than before.
Ultimate Ears leaves the main design of the Wonderboom even for their second-generation units. It only means that you will still see the +/- prominent volume buttons, power, pairing, as well as the track control buttons at the top.
Unlike the original Wonderboom, the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 2’s volume controls no longer have the clicky feel, but they end up feeling better to the touch. You will also notice an improvement in the arrangement at the top of the speaker, with its middle track control button now a physical element to press. The company’s logo previously covered this specific button, and it didn’t look like one at all.
The Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 2 improved their cable hanging loop by using a cloth mesh. With that, if you want to hang the speaker in a specific area, its loop will be available for use. Compared to the original speaker’s loop, this one is broader and more user-friendly; thus, it encourages everyone to carry the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 2 around.
If you end up losing your grip on the speaker, worry not since the Wonderboom 2 is rated to withstand a 5-foot drop. Also, some of its additional volume houses a bigger battery since it received a significant boost from 10 hours up to 13 hours. The material that covers the Wonderboom 2’s body comes in a variety of colors, and it gives off this athletic-leisure style to it. But as we mentioned earlier, the one that we have is the Radical Red shade which is a lovely and appealing shade for the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 2.
At the bottom, a deep rubber flap conceals the speaker’s charging port, giving it its water-resistant feature. It would’ve been even better if Ultimate Ears used a USB Type-C for their speaker, but they opted for the micro instead.
Overall, the design of the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 2 is highly notable since the company kept what works well, and improved those that didn’t.
The maximum sound level of the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 2 is 86dBC for the standard mode and 87dBC when using the Outdoor Boost mode. Its frequency ranges from 75Hz to 20kHz, and it comes with two 49-millimeter drivers, plus two 46.1 x 65.2-millimeter passive radiators.
The speaker makes use of rechargeable Lithium-ion batteries that can last for up to 13 hours of life in-between charges. Its total charge time lasts around 2.5 hours with the BC 1.2-compliant adapter.
For its compatibility, the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 2 can work well with your tablet, smartphones, and any other device that supports Bluetooth (A2DP or Advanced Audio Distribution Profile).
All-New Outdoor Boost
With the new Outdoor Boost, the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 2 delivers a bigger 360-degree sound with enhanced bass. This feature allows for louder and more powerful audio for outdoor-listening.
13 Hours Playtime
The Wonderboom 2 comes with 13 hours of playtime, making it perfect for pool parties, beach detours, impromptu raves, and more.
The Wonderboom is also features an IP-67 rating, which means that it’s waterproof and dust-proof. You can bring it with you in the shower or your floatable pool, and you won’t have to worry about your speaker getting wet.
Pair Two Wonderboom Speakers
With a single push of a button, you can increase audio impact by pairing two Wonderboom two speakers. The best thing about this is that you don’t have to use any cables to connect the speakers. You can also pair this to its predecessor, Wonderboom.
Wonderboom 2 comes with a lot of surprises. Aside from being small with a big sound, it’s drop-proof and it comes with a stylish hanging loop. Enjoying your music is easy since you can clip it and drop it almost anywhere, without worrying about damages. It’s the perfect speaker to use when you’re dancing and biking.
Using the Product
The Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 2 produces full and rich sounds despite being a small speaker. Plus, it also has notable treble and bass to boot which makes it one of the best and quality-sounding portable speakers around.
Usually, the bass lacks in small format speakers, but that isn’t the case with the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 2. It can keep the low-range richness at all times even with the volume range, then releasing distortion at a heightened volume which is something that we consider as impressive.
What gives the speaker its appeal is the combination of convenience, portability, and volume. With these aspects, the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 2 becomes an ideal speaker for rooms, a pool party, or in any place you happen to be.
One of the best features of the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 2 is that you can pair it with another Wonderboom 2. If you prefer more prominent sounds, or if you want to fill a spacious room with good tunes, then the speaker does an excellent job for these. To do this, all you have to do is make a long press on each Wonderboom. The process will link both speakers to each other.
Once done, both speakers will play the same tunes from your playlist, and you can even have shared controls as well. It means that you can pause/play from any speaker without any inconvenience. If you don’t have another Wonderboom 2, but you have the original model instead, you can still pair the two speakers easily.
Another thing is that the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 2 has an IP-67 rating. So, even if we submerged the speaker in water, it still worked efficiently, and its sounds remained great. Just make sure that it doesn’t stay submerged for more than 30 minutes. Aside from this, the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 2 is also dust resistant which makes things even better.
Now for its playtime, the company did claim that their Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 2 can play for 13 hours on a full charge. Surprisingly, we were able to go slightly over the given hours on a full charge, and this is a considerable improvement over the last generation of speakers.
So overall, the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 2 performed excellently. It looked great and was able to produce outstanding sounds for your music enjoyment. With that, we’re giving the speaker two thumbs-up, and we highly recommend this to everyone.
The original Wonderboom was already a well-designed speaker that delivers high-quality audio, and this newer version comes with enhanced features. The Wonderboom 2’s design has slight changes, while its 360-degree sound has a better bass response. It also comes with a longer battery life of up to 14 hours, and it has all-round protection against dust and water.
If you want the most durable waterproof and dust-proof speakers, we highly recommend the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 2. It has an excellent design, it’s easy to carry around, and it delivers high-quality audio that you’ll surely enjoy.
