Noctua NH-C14S Review

Noctua is one of the most respected and well-known names in the whole cooling industry and they’re back with one of their latest and probably best cooler created – the NH-C14S. If you’re someone who follows Noctua’s products and activities, you will notice that the name of their latest cooler is somewhat similar to another one of their popular cooler, the NH-C14. The new “S” model features the company’s award-winning design of the original cooler, then improves on the already cool and effective features that it has; you’ll definitely see a better and more durable fan when using the Noctua NH-C14S.

The Noctua NH-C14S is slightly more pricey than other coolers in the market, but considering just how amazing the company’s products are, you can expect that the build quality, acoustics, and cooling performance of this device is excellent. So without further wait, let’s jump right into it and take a closer look at the Noctua NH-C14S and see what it has to offer.

Noctua NH-C14S Review – Whats in the Box?

The package that the company uses measures at around 25 centimeters in length, 19.5 centimeters wide and about 18.5 centimeters high. The front portion of the box features the regular design of Noctua packages, with the product’s name written in the white block located at the left portion. At the top right area of the box, you’ll see that the device is a C-type cooler; along the brown area of the package, you’ll get to have a sneak peek of the Noctua NH-C14S together with a list of its features.  In another panel, you’ll see the cooler’s name written at the top portion and on the right side; as for the brown-coloured panel, you’ll see a set of product and fan specifications, as well as the scope of delivery. Also, take note of the pair of spatial renderings located at the bottom right portion of the NH-C14S box.

Once you open the Noctua NH-C14S box, you’ll find three segregated packages of the hardware and beneath these, a layer of cardboard protects the cooler, encasing the device securely in place to avoid any damages during transit. We did see a few damages on the box, probably during delivery, but the Noctua NH-C14S still appeared perfectly fine without any damages or dents. It’s safe to say that Noctua really protects their products in these types of packaging and we’re really grateful for this. We’re giving them a thumbs-up for this. The package also includes Noctua’s Secu-Firm 2 mounting system that supports most of the sockets that are available today. Also, everything you need is included in the box; to support older types of sockets, Noctua also sells separate kits for such.

Other than the NH-C14S, here are the other items included in the package: four LGA-2011 mounting screws, four AMD white spacers, four AMD mounting screws, four Phillips head nuts,  four black Intel spacers, two Intel mounting arms, four fan clips, two AMD mounting arms, an Intel backplate, one LNA adapter, a 140mm x 140mm x 25mm NFA-14 fan, a tube of NT-H1 thermal paste, one Phillips screwdriver, a metal Noctua badge, and the installation guide.

Noctua NH-C14S Review – Noctua Still Leads the Way in Cooling

The Noctua NH-C14S is a big unit which gives it a lot of surface area while also letting it handle the huge 140 mm fan. Its fin stack is quite tight while the sides are angled perfectly to close this off; this allows the other fan to properly direct airflow right out of the cooler’s top and efficiently over the heat pipes. The fan is pre-installed and it features the typical Noctua design; its fan clips are easy to use for removing and mounting the cooler and you also have an additional set included in the package. This is necessary if you plan to add another fan to the top portion of the cooler.

Its base plate is firmly attached below the fan that also features a thick metallic back portion; this is necessary to better improve the NH-C14S’ cooling capabilities. As for the mounting screws, these are also sprung and pre-fitted which makes the whole installation process easier and quicker.  A total of seven heat pipes are available and all of these are aligned perfectly to provide full protection of the CPU block. When it comes to the device’s contact plate, it is adequately large and has an excellent finish, giving it a great covering over any CPU that you choose.

The Noctua NH-C14S is the successor to the NH-C14 and it is a high-class, top-flow, and high-quality CPU cooler; it is a highly effective device that is adjustable, compatible, and efficient. This is all because of its deep fin stack and the NFA-14 PWM fan; the NH-C14S also offers a silent cooling efficiency that is similar to its dual-fan predecessor but more efficient and versatile. With the fan installed right on the fins, the cooler is generally compatible with RAM modules that reach up to 70 mm in height; and with the fan equipped beneath the fins, the total height of the Noctua NH-C14S is just 115 mm which makes it a very suitable piece for a lot of HTPC cases.

Simultaneously, the new offset design lets you clear the top portion of the PCI-e slot that can be found on most ATX and mATX motherboards. The NH-C14S also features the company’s most trusted Secu-Firm2 multi-socket mounting system, Low Noise Adaptors, the NT-H1 thermal compound, and a full six years’ manufacturer’s warranty.

It is Based on the NH-C14

This award-winning device has become a stable reference for 140 mm top-flow coolers; and with the deeper fin stack as well as the more efficient NFA-14 PWM fan, the newer Noctua NH-C14S offers identical performance but with a more improved and developed compatibility.

C-Type + Top Flow Design

This design of the NH-C14S does not only provide you with a quiet and excellent cooling performance, but it also maintains a much lower profile compared to today’s 140 mm tower-styled coolers. Moreover, the design also ensures that the device has outstanding airflow over the RAM modules, as well as the near-socket components of the motherboard.

High-Clearance Mode

With the NF-A-14 fan setup on the top of the device, the NH-C14S provides you with an extended clearance beneath the fin stack. With this, the device is compatible with the RAM modules and chipset coolers along with heat-spreaders of 70 mm tall.

Offset Design – PCI-e Clearance

The design of the Noctua NH-C14S features two axes, and because of this, the heatsink clears the highest PCI-e slot on a lot of ATX and mATX motherboards when the curve of the heat pipes are in front of the I/O panel or PCI-e slots.
The NF-A-14 140 mm Premium Fan

This premium fan features great aerodynamic optimizations like the Flow Acceleration Channels and is also known for being one of the most quiet 140 mm fans available today. Combined with the NH-C14S’ deeper fin stack, it lets the cooler achieve identical levels of performance as its dual-fan predecessor while only utilizing one NF-A14.

Secu-Firm2 Mounting System

The Secu-Firm2 from Noctua have greatly become synonymous with quality, ease of use, and safety while also guaranteeing perfect contact pressure, as well as maximum convenience on every current socket. And complying with the open Secu-Firm standard, the Noctua NH-C14S can be compatible with much older LGA-775 and LGA-1366 sockets via the NM-l3 mounting kit which the company provides for free.

NT-H1 Thermal Compound

The NT-H1 from Noctua is proven to have a professional-grade TIM solution that offers you with minimum thermal resistance, outstanding reliability, and adequate ease of use.

How it Performs

The Noctua NH-C14S is one impressive cooler since it provides you with excellent performance that is almost similar to the NH-D-15S but with improved memory clearance; not only that, but it also features cooling surrounding motherboard components. Just like all the other coolers from Noctua, the NH-C14S is extremely quiet at just 43 dBA with the fan on max RPM. This definitely makes the NH-C14S perfect for a lot of micro-ATX and mini-ITX systems, especially with its height of 115 mm in low profile mode. So with its quality build, easy use, solid packaging, awesome warranty, and a great bundle of accessories, you’ll have a very appealing product from Noctua.

How to Install the NH-D15S

You will need to set the backplate on the motherboard before sliding the black plastic washers on the posts. After this, you can position the device’s mounting arms over the posts then secure them using the four Phillips head nut; after this, you can apply thermal paste to prepare for fixing the heatsink. Now, you can screw the heatsink to the mounting arms before attaching the fan to it; once done, just plug the fan into the CPU’s fan header to complete the setup.

Setting up the Noctua NH-C14S was generally painless and we would give Noctua a double thumbs-up for making things user-friendly; and since it also has a more convenient size, it makes it easier to install the device into a case compared to its bigger siblings, namely the NH-C14 or the NH-D15S-D-15

Conclusion

If you’re planning to build a system where compatibility is an essential aspect, you’ll never go wrong with the Secu-Firm2 mounting system of the Noctua NH-C14S. The cooler is very easy to setup, maintain, and remove; plus, there’s also room for an extra fan if ever you’d need to use one, but we really don’t think you’d need to even during overclocking.  Its top flow design only means that any conflicts within the system’s VRM, bigger expansion cards, and memory are not going to happen with the device; plus, you can also position the cooler depending on your preference.

With its performance, quality, quietness, and all the extras that make installing the cooler easier, we definitely recommend the Noctua NH-C14S and consider it a great investment for anyone who wants an excellent addition to their system.
