In this day and age, we are all becoming connected via streaming media. Because of this, it shouldn’t be surprising that manufacturers are utilizing this means to catch our attention and even our pockets.
Looking around, you’ll notice a ton of options available, especially for people who opt for headphones, as well as an abundance of portable audio options for Bluetooth speakers. One of the best choices today would be the Flip 5 from JBL.
JBL’s Flip 5 is a contemporary take on a Bluetooth portable speaker. Once you pair it, the speaker will stream all your favorite music from your mobile to the speaker. Do note that this is a speaker without a mic, so you can’t use it as a speakerphone. It also doesn’t work with smart assistants and other similar things. However, it does one job – produces excellent sounds, and the speaker does it exceptionally well.
JBL Flip 5 Review – What’s in the Box?
The Flip 5 comes in your typical JBL packaging which is clean, simple and features the product’s image in front. You can find the company’s name on the upper-left corner of the box, while opposite to this is the speaker’s name. Below the image, you will read “Bluetooth” on the lower-left portion of the box and 12 hours on the bottom right corner.
Inside, you will see the JBL Flip 5 packed securely to ensure it doesn’t receive any unnecessary damages while in transit. Other than the speaker, other items in the box include one Type-C USB cable, a safety sheet, the warranty card, and a quick start guide.
JBL Flip 5 Review
When we speak of the design and aesthetics of the JBL Flip 5, you will notice some slight differences compared to the older Flip 4 speaker. These subtle changes make the Flip 5 appear more refined, sleek, and premium. Despite the changes, the Flip 5 still sports the durable mesh fabric grill that conceals almost the entire speaker. The rubber ends are also present to provide additional protection against sudden bumps; plus, it helps keep the speakers standing upright.
Like the earlier Flip speakers, the JBL Flip 5 also comes with the trademark passive radiators that vibrate based on your volume levels. Another notable aspect of the speaker is that it is IPX-7 certified so you can submerge the JBL Flip 5 underwater for about 30 minutes, and it can go as deep as 3.3 feet.
Buttons on the speaker are straightforward, and these include the volume up & down, pause & play, back, then the skip / forward buttons. What’s interesting is that JBL included a Party Boost button that lets you link to other Party Boost speakers, allowing them to play simultaneously. Just remember that the feature is not yet compatible with the Connect Plus speakers from JBL. So if you have older speakers like the Charge 4, JBL Extreme 2, Pulse 3 and more, you can’t link these to the Flip 5. Luckily, JBL will provide a firmware update anytime soon to fix the problem.
If you look at the back of the speaker, you’ll see that the pairing and power buttons feature LED lights. You will also find a new power indicator that immediately notifies you of how much power is left. Lastly, the JBL Flip 5 now has an exposed USB-C charging port which is different from their previous models with concealed charging ports.
The JBL Flip 5 has an output power of 20 Watts RMS with a music play time of 12 hours. It measures 7.1 x 2.7 x 2.9 inches and weighs .54 kilograms. The speaker connects via Bluetooth 4.2 while its battery capacity is 4,800 mAh. If you need to charge the empty battery, it will take up to a total of 2.5 hours to fill.
Higher Quality Audio
The Flip 5 features an all-new racetrack-shaped driver that provides high output and enhanced bass. With that, you can feel and enjoy your music in a compact, portable package.
Take Your Party Anywhere
You don’t have to worry about changing your battery with the Flip 5 since it comes with more than 12 hours of playtime. Enjoy JBL’s signature sound for extended periods as you keep the music playing.
You can take the Flip 5 to the beach or a pool party with no worries since it’s IPX7-rated waterproof. It means that the speaker can submerge in water up to 3-feet deep for a maximum of thirty minutes.
PartyBoost for Added Fun
PartyBoost is a feature that allows you to enjoy stereo sound or connect two or more JBL speakers that are PartyBoost-compatible for enhanced music.
Using the Product
We’ve categorized the performance review into different sections to give you more precise insights on how well the JBL Flip 5 worked. Let’s begin with the low-end sound output.
The low-end sounds from the Flip 5 gave us excellent and tight-sounding bass. What we loved was that even when we cranked up the volume, the tunes we were playing still sounded nice, clean, and audible. Another interesting thing to note is that the bass got better when we increased the volume. It gave us a deep sound that wasn’t overblown and painful to the ears.
For its mids, the Flip 5 delivered excellent mids with a lot of fidelity and detail while simultaneously keeping things clean for a Bluetooth speaker. Instrumentation and vocal sounds were equally present, and none of them overpowered each other.
The JBL flip 5 provided us with solid highs though there were instances when the sounds were a bit off. Though it was still okay since it prevented highs from becoming too out of control, leading to uncomfortable and peaky sounds. Instead, the speaker delivered a smooth, powerful, and stimulating sound that worked perfectly with anything we threw at it.
Low-quality or older recordings that we tried playing sounded fine, which is all thanks to the smooth highs of the Flip 5. So basically, if you’re looking for portable speakers that sound great no matter what audio you play, then the JBL Flip 5 is your top choice.
Since the Flip 5 is IPX-7 rated, the speaker was able to handle splashes and even a dunk underwater without it breaking. With its weight, it isn’t a speaker that you’d call light, but it certainly isn’t massive and challenging to carry around. We had no issues keeping it in our bag and bringing it when walking to the lake; plus, it became a mainstay whenever we decided to go camping.
Just keep in mind that the Flip 5 is noticeably more significant than the slim Bluetooth speakers in the market, so it isn’t a speaker to bring during long walks or hikes.
Overall, the JBL Flip 5 is an efficient and well-designed Bluetooth speaker that performed excellently and produced outstanding sounds. With that, we’re giving it two thumbs-up, and we highly recommend this Bluetooth speaker to everyone.
JBL is a company known for producing affordable yet durable audio devices that deliver excellent sounds, and the JBL Flip 5 is not an exception. It may not be the perfect speaker, but for its price, it offers a lot more than what we expected.
The JBL Flip 5 is a mid-range portable speaker that is excellent for all-around use. It has a durable yet lightweight body that is waterproof, making it perfect for outdoor adventures. Most importantly, it delivers high-quality audio, and its sound quality has improved a lot compared to the previous units we’ve tried.
If you’re in the market for the best portable speakers, the JBL Flip 5 is an excellent choice for you. It’s not only affordable, but it also has a premium appearance, durable construction, and high-quality audio to make the most of your parties.
