JBL Flip 4 Bluetooth Speaker Review

JBL is one of the best brands to choose when it comes to affordable and accessible audio devices especially when it comes to quality wireless speakers. Their Flip and Charge series continuously provides us with speakers that feature competitive sound quality in durable rugged form factors; not only that but their products improve and only get better than ever.

Today, we are going to focus on the JBL Flip 4 Bluetooth Speaker which is the company’s latest take on tubular sound devices. At an affordable price, the Flip 4 provides us with a versatile and convenient way to easily listen to tunes anytime, anywhere. Indoors or outdoors, we know that the Flip 4 will definitely give off clean and quality music that is great for its value.

So before anything else, let’s check out what’s included in the box of the Flip 4 Bluetooth Speaker from JBL.

JBL Flip 4 Review – Whats in the Box?

We got the black Flip 4 Bluetooth Speaker and it comes in a heavily-branded cardboard package that features a couple of the speaker’s cool renderings. There’s a little cloth tab on the package that we pulled out to open the box and once we did, we saw the swank and classy black on black design of the Bluetooth speaker and we completely liked its overall appearance. We also appreciated how the company packed the Bluetooth speaker.

We pulled out the tab and it removed the sleeve to unveil the Flip 4 Bluetooth Speaker – a tube-like shaped device that is contained in a regular foam casing. The cardboard sleeve of the Flip’s packaging also features the quick start guide and the warranty information, while a much smaller and cleverly hidden sleeve homes the device’s Micro USB charging cable.

The Product

JBL Flip 4 Review – Smooth Beats for Summer

When we first saw the JBL Flip 4 Bluetooth Speaker, we noticed that it looks just like the Flip 3 from 2016. Thing is, don’t be deceived by its appearance since the speaker is a bit bigger and it weighs around 1.15 pounds; it is also concealed by a more durable material that has a tighter and stronger weave. As part of the external design improvements, the Flip 4 Bluetooth Speaker also received a couple of changes inside which include new drivers and a much bigger battery capacity that provides us with longer battery life compared to the Flip 3.

Another great improvement of the Flip 4 Bluetooth Speaker is that it is now completely waterproof instead of just being splash-proof. The speaker has a total measurement of about seven inches wide and almost three inches in diameter; it also features thick and durable rubber end caps as well as a strip of rubber that runs all the way across the device’s back. We were able to position the Flip 4 either standing up vertically or laid down in a horizontal fashion – thus its name, Flip. The Bluetooth speaker also comes with a detachable lanyard which let us hang our speaker in different spots like the loop on our backpack, a tree branch, and even from the shower head.

We also appreciated that JBL added volume controls to their Flip 4, as well as a play button and a Bluetooth-pairing button. The play button is also helpful since it let us advance to the next song: we just needed to quickly press on the button twice and we were on to the next track on our playlist; pretty cool and convenient feature in our opinion.

Behind the Bluetooth speaker, we took note of the power button, a button that connects to other speakers from JBL, and also the battery life indicator. Beneath the flap, we also saw the micro USB port that is needed for charging the battery, as well as a 3.5 mm input jack.

The Flip 4 Bluetooth Speaker from JBL is a portable device that gives off an outstanding  stereo sound that is crisp and clean even outdoors. The compact Bluetooth speaker works using a 3,000 mAh Li-ion battery (rechargeable) that allows you to enjoy twelve hours of non-stop, high-quality audio playback.

The Flip 4 Bluetooth Speaker sports a durable and waterproof material which makes the device a completely reliable product for indoor and outdoor use. Not only that, but the Flip 4 also features an integrated echo and noise-canceling speakerphone that will let you enjoy crystal clear calls. JBL also made use of their Connect + technology which allows you to link JBL Connect + enabled speakers to further amplify and improve your listening experience; and with just a press of a button, you can readily activate and access Google Now or Siri from the Flip 4 Bluetooth Speaker. With just its specifications, we can already say that this is a product that we’d highly recommend.

Product Features

We have with us the black Flip 4 Bluetooth Speaker and we really like how it looks since it gives that clean and classy vibe that is really visually appealing. The speaker has a built-in 3000 mAh rechargeable battery that can support up to twelve hours of continuous playback at moderate to high volume levels. When it comes to the Flip 4’s wireless Bluetooth streaming, the speaker actually allowed us to wirelessly link up to two devices which we used to alternately play music.

Other excellent features of the JBL Flip 4 Bluetooth Speaker is that it is completely waterproof; this means that you can fully submerge the Bluetooth speaker underwater, letting it stay for thirty minutes. Additionally, the speaker can also go as deep as three meters in total.

For convenience, the Flip 4 also provides us with a voice assistant integration feature, letting us easily access Google Now and Siri from the JBL Flip 4 Bluetooth Speaker with just a press of a button. The speaker also has a speakerphone with noise and echo-canceling aspects which is a really great integration from JBL. When it comes to the device’s durability, its rugged rubber housing and new material covering makes the Flip 4 Bluetooth Speaker more durable and reliable compared to the earlier model. The speaker is also integrated with JBL’s bass radiator which is a dual-external passive radiator that makes the Flip 4 capable of delivering more bass that sounds clear and crisp.

Performance

The JBL Flip 4 Bluetooth Speaker beats the usual trade-offs that small speakers make: instead of having lifeless vocals and a weak bass delivery, the Flip 4 impressed us with its thumping low end, crisp treble, and full mid-tones which is great for continuous listening. We increased the volume to see if it would still provide us with excellent sounds and the Flip 4 did deliver exquisitely; plus, the Bluetooth speaker also holds up great on the performance side, providing us with quality sounds even if we used it outdoors.

The 40 mm drivers of the Flip 4 blasts clean, quality, powerful tunes with a bass response that avoids delivering sounds that drown out the treble and everything else. We also liked the fact that the Flip 4 didn’t give us any of the muffled sounds that we usually experience with other similar speakers so we’re giving the Flip 4 a thumbs-up for this. We tried a couple of tunes with the speaker and it sounded excellent with every genre we played: the Bluetooth speaker delivered clean and catchy sounds when we played hip-hop tracks and dance or electronic tunes.

During our whole time testing the JBL Flip 4 Bluetooth Speaker, we can say that its most excellent feature when it comes to audio performance is its ability to produce clean, clear, and loud sounds despite using the Bluetooth speaker outdoors. We tested it in an area where a lot of other noise could be heard and impressively, we still enjoyed our playlist during the whole time out. As for the Flip 4’s construction, it is safe to say that its body is rugged and crafted to withstand abuse; just don’t submerge it in water overnight or with its rubber cap slightly open and the Flip 4 Bluetooth speaker can last a couple of years without any issues.

How to Use

It doesn’t really matter if you have any or no experience when it comes to installing Bluetooth speakers since setting up the Flip 4 is extremely easy. Just press the power button and you will receive an audio cue to know that the device has powered up; the speaker’s LED also glows white to indicate that the device is unpaired. Press the Bluetooth button once to pair the Flip 4 to the device’s Bluetooth menu then you’re all set to play music seamlessly.

The Flip 4 Bluetooth Speaker is also able to simultaneously link to two different devices so you can simply repeat the previously mentioned process to pair the speaker with other devices, allowing either of these to control and play the music.

Software

There isn’t really much to do when setting up the Flip 4 Bluetooth Speaker since JBL’s free Connect App for Android and iOS includes a few useful tweaks that you can make. These include changing the speaker’s Play button to easily activate Siri, Google Now or Hey. Also, the Connect + technology allows you to easily pair up the Flip 4 with other JBL speakers that support the software for better sounds or to create a left-to-right stereo system.

Conclusion

After we’ve tested the Flip 4 Bluetooth Speaker from JBL, we can definitely say that it gives off impressive quality sounds with big and full bass, plus crystal-clear vocals. Not only that, but the other great thing about the speaker is that it’s now waterproof, so you won’t have to worry about taking it outdoors or getting it wet during pool parties and the like.

Add in its improved battery-life and outstanding speakerphone, there is basically nothing to complain about this Bluetooth speaker and we recommend this for anyone who enjoys listening to quality-sounding music at an excellent price range. We’re definitely giving two thumbs-up for JBL’s Flip 4 Bluetooth Speakers.
