Back in the year 2012, the smart lighting system of Philips Hue sustained its perfection despite being a pricey option for smart households. And over the past years, the company has firmly adjusted a successful formula over a total of three generations of products.
Here, they have enhanced, as well as improved, the brightness and color accuracy, adding the HomeKit support by Apple while also extending the luminary and bulb ranges. Until today the absence of outdoor rated lights has been quite a surprise, as well as a frustrating exclusion for every homeowner who is searching to add a dash of color to their gardens and decks.
But this time, Philips Hue decided to take a step outside with their new range of outdoor products. The Phillips Hue can bring out bright white lights or any other color combinations of your choice. You can also set the scenes with them, so they can readily pair up and glow together. You’ll also get to enjoy the same controls and color options with the Hue Outdoor lights from Philips, but the thing here is that they’re completely waterproof lights that are made to enhance and blend your outdoor area.
Today, we’ll focus on the Hue Calla Outdoor Bollard from Philips, and see if it’s as good as they claim it to be, and if it’s something worth purchasing.
Hue Calla Outdoor Bollard Review – What’s in the Box?
When we got our hands on the Hue Calla, we couldn’t help but notice its packaging. Philips really made it simple yet eye-catching because of the choice of color which is a nice vibrant violet.
On the front part of the box, you will see an image of the product; then on the upper left portion, downwards, you will find the brand’s name, and other details about the Hue Calla.
At the back, you will find the features and other important details about the product. Other than that, there’s nothing else to check out on the box’s exterior, so we went on to check out what’s inside.
Inside, you will find the base unit power supply which is equipped with a huge 18 AWG. You will also find a 3.5-meter cable, as well as a 5-meter extension cable included in the package. For each extension kit, there will be an additional 16 feet cable included.
Hue Calla Outdoor Bollard Review
The company provides us with a sealed, low voltage and in-line power supply with the Calla, so you will need to plug its power supply to a protected outdoor outlet. A bubble cover would do, but it’s best if this outlet won’t be controlled by a switch. This is because shutting off the power to the light defeats its function of using smart lights.
The fixture sports a stub cable together with a bayonet-like connection right at the ends. It links either the longer cable from the power supply, or the 16-foot extension cable that is provided.
When you’ve finally set one light, you can purchase up to a total of four extra units, then daisy chain these to that same power supply you have.
The Hue Calla Outdoor Bollard has a lifetime of up to 25,000 hours and a total output fixture of 600 lumens. The mains power range goes from 110 to 127 Volts, 60 Hertz, with an included bulb that is 8 Watts max. There is just one bulb present, and its total replacement bulb is also 8 Watts. In addition, it comes with the IP65 IP code.
The Hue Calla also features protection from jetting water, and it comes with a II double insulated type of protection which is good.

Using the Product
With the Hue Bridge installed and set up, we tried powering the lights which gave us a nice illuminated glow. We got the white and color version so it really looked great when it lit up.
Starting up the Hue smartphone application, we really liked how the lights were immediately detected. It took less than 30 seconds, and the second time we tried it was just as quick. Configuring each of the lights was extremely easy since most of the process was automatic, but it we suggest that you take a couple of minutes to make a new room wherein you can manage and group outdoor luminaries.
The Hue Calla Outdoor Bollard gave us the most impact when the sun started setting in; during daylight hours, the colors were really noticeable though sometimes it was a bit washed out. But once sunset comes, you’ll start seeing the benefits and charm of the 640 lumens available.
Just switch to the Energize scene and the Hue Calla will start emitting a crisp and bright light right at the top of the temperature range which is more than enough to light up your pathways, flower beds, and decks.
As for the colors, these are even more accurate which is something that really delighted us. With a number of these, the scenes of your surroundings will come alive, and will surely bathe your garden with lush and lovely shades. So all in all, we loved the Hue Calla Outdoor Bollard’s performance, and we’re giving it a double thumbs-up for it.
The smartphone app for Hue gives you an extensive collection of options to readily personalize and customize your outdoor lighting. Personalized routines let you trigger lighting changes at a definite time like sunrise or sunset. There’s also a go to sleep option that is often utilized for bedrooms, allowing you to gradually dim the lights once night sets in.
With the built-in support for the wide range of smart assistants, voice management and control adds real benefits, while the IFTTT support provides an excellent collection of service integrations and third-party triggers. You’ll even get to connect your Mac or PC to the Hue system, then sync all your outdoor lights with the music of your choice. Just take a bit of time to experiment, and you’ll find a lot of fun in Philip’s luminescent world.
The Hue Calla Outdoor Bollard is the smart outdoor light that we’ve been wishing for. Installation was absolutely easy, and we had a lot of fun tweaking all the settings on the Philips Hue app through our mobile phones. We’ve been changing the lights everyday and we’re really satisfied with every single shade that it displays.
Now, let’s go to everyone’s final question: should you buy the Hue Calla Outdoor Bollard? It’s definitely a yes, especially if you need outdoor lights and hold occasions in your home.
