We recently reviewed the HiMedia Q10 Pro and found that it was a fantastic media player that offered a great amount of features and handled pretty much everything we threw at it. This was no surprise as it is always expected that HiMedia will produce excellent media players due to their experience and track record in the media player market today. This is why were excited when the HiMedia Q5 Pro crossed our doorstep for review. The Q5 Pro is a cheaper alternative to the Q10 Pro whilst still promising great specs and features. Does the HiMedia Q5 Pro hit the mark again? Let’s find out in our HiMedia Q5 Pro review.
HiMedia Q5 Pro Review – What’s in the Box?
When the HiMedia Q5 Pro was delivered it was packaged securely in a shipping box which kept the Q5 Pro box inside nice and safe. Removing the Q5 Pro box I was once again impressed with the packaging that the Q5 Pro comes in. The box makes use of a simple colour pallete that follows the HiMedia branding and showcases some product shots and specification on the box. The box was not damaged at all whilst in transit.
Opening the box I found that all of the contents inside were securely packaged away with no loose parts rolling around the box. This was great to see as it ensured that the media layer got to me in 1 piece. Inside the box I found:
- HiMedia Q5 Pro Android TV box
- Power Adapter
- IR Remote Control
- HDMI Cable
- Instruction Manual
The HiMedia Q5 Pro – Premium Design
As with other HiMedia products the HiMedia Q5 Pro looks like a premium product thanks to its aluminium housing and very solid construction. The Q5 Pro design has some nice finishing touches such as the bevelled edges and the matte aluminium finish ensures that fingerprints don’t show. On the top of the device you will find the HiMedia logo which fits the product nicely, it does not appear over whelming at all. The HiMedia Q5 Pro would fit nicely with any home theatre setup.
The Ins and Outs of it
On the front of the HiMedia Q5 Pro you will find the power button as well as a large LED information display.
Turning to the left side of the media player is where you will see 2 USB ports as well as a micro SD card slot.
On the right of the Q5 Pro there is a single USB port.
Finally, turning the device to its rear is where the main input and output ports are located. This includes the power, Ethernet LAN, restore button, HDMI, composite video, optical audio and antenna.
The HiMedia Q5 Pro Remote Control
The remote control that is included with the Q5 Pro is the same remote that ships with the Q10 Pro.
The included remote control is a little larger than those that ship with most other Android TV boxes however it is not too large for your hand. The remote fits snuggly in your hand and definitely feels like a more premium remote control.
On the front of the IR remote control you will find your key Android box control buttons as well as dedicated media controls. One great thing about the remote control that that is includes remote control learning functions allowing you to configure the HiMedia Q5 Pro remote control to be able to control other IR devices you may own. This is a welcome addition that helps limit the amount of remote controls lying around on the couch.
As HiMedia is known for producing some of the best media players in the market today I would have liked to have seen a Bluetooth controller included instead of an IR remote. This is just my own opinion and the included remote control worked as intended.

Initial Setup, Dashboard and Using it
The setup process was once again very simple with the HiMedia Q5 Pro and was a matter on connecting HDMI cable and Ethernet cable, plugging into the TV and powering it on. Once powered on the media player took approximately 24 seconds to boot to the dashboard.
The HiMedia Q5 Pro keeps the same dashboard which was used for the Q10 Pro which is great. The dashboard is a nice and modern, making use of multi-coloured tiles that follows the flat Materiel design from Google. Navigating around the dashboard I found it to be smooth and responsive and I noticed no issues of lag.
As with the Q10 Pro the Q5 Pro also comes with some applications pre-installed such as Facebook, Skype, Netflix, Kodi and Happy cast which provides you with AirPlay functionality. The Google Play store is installed and I found no issues whilst using it to download applications. Everything works as expected.
HiMedia Q5 Pro OTA Updates
The Q5 Pro supports OTA updates which is great. In order to update Android boxes you generally need to load the latest firmware on an SD card or USB and then manually flash the latest update. The issue with this is that its time consuming and there is always a chance you can brick the device.
With OTA updates you can simply click the check for updates button and if there is an update simply hit the download and install button and the HiMedia Q5 Pro will take care of the rest.
For media play back I used Kodi which is what I use for all of my media playback on my different media players. Kodi is available on the Google Play store for free.
Launching the Kodi app was trouble free and I did not notice any issues such as lag or stuttering. Navigating around the Kodi app was a smooth experience and media playback was great.
I ran AnTuTu Video Tester to determine media playback compatibility where it scored 952.
Putting the HiMedia Q5 Pro through the Antutu Benchmark test saw the device score 41,246.
Running the Geekbench3 benchmarking app the HiMedia Q5 Pro achieved a Single-Core score of 688 and a Multi-Score score of 2143.
Testing the device with Vellamo saw the device receive a Metal score of 1052.
The Q5 Pro is connected to my home network via an Ethernet cable and my internet connection is running on 100mb Fibre. Network performance on the HiMedia Q5 Pro provided stable speeds both up and down which will allowed me to enjoy buffer free streaming. I received stable speeds for download of 84.86Mbps and upload of 6.30 Mbps.
