The launch of the NVIDIA Super card range displayed a massive shift in both the relative card’s performance, as well as an excellent pricing strategy. Today, we will be covering the Gigabyte’s latest SUPER graphics card, which is the GIGABYTE RTX 2070 Super Gaming OC.
It comes with a triple-fan cooler, single-zone RGB lights, and factory overclocked cores. Sounds quite promising, given that it’s also one of the more reasonably priced models in the market today. So with the GIGABYTE RTX 2070 Super Gaming OC finally in our hands, it’s time for us to check and see if this graphics card has anything more to offer. Or, if the mix of the twin fan NVIDIA cooler and the enhanced performance of the Founders Edition is as good as it gets?
Before anything else, let’s go and take a look at what’s inside the box of the GIGABYTE RTX 2070 Super Gaming OC.
GIGABYTE RTX 2070 Super Gaming OC Review – What’s in the Box?
The GIGABYTE RTX 2070 Super Gaming OC arrived in a cardboard box that sports the same style and design as other current-generation cards from the company. It only means that you won’t find an image of the product on the package, and instead, a huge robotic eye displayed at the center is your view.
The company’s name is on the upper-left corner of the box and written in bold white fonts. You will see the GeForce RTX on the lower-right portion of the package, with NVIDIA and 2070 SUPER written close to it. The lower-left part showcases all the main features of the card, which is pretty convenient when you’re out scouting for these products in physical stores.
Once you flip the box, you will see a clear yet brief explanation of how its central fan design counter-rotates to help remove dead spots. It also notes how to keep the heatsink functioning as efficiently as possible simultaneously. Cool temperatures equal enhanced boost clocks equal heightened performance – what more could you ask for?
Once you’re checking inside the box, you will find the GIGABYTE RTX 2070 Super Gaming OC itself, along with other accessories. These include the driver disk, a quick start guide, and a separate leaflet.
This leaflet informs you about extending the warranty for the RTX 2070 to 4 years when you register for the product online.
GIGABYTE RTX 2070 Super Gaming OC Review
Now let’s focus on the GIGABYTE RTX 2070 Super Gaming OC itself. GIGABYTE is rehashing its design for the 2080 Gaming OC that appeared last year, and in all honesty, this idea makes financial sense for the company, so we aren’t criticizing them for this. Though it’s good to note that if you’re someone searching for a brand new design or additional features, you won’t find them here with this graphics card.
The GIGABYTE RTX 2070 Super Gaming OC’s body comes in a matte black plastic shroud with just a few grey highlights to add more style to the product.
Since it’s a product crafted from plastic, the shroud isn’t as premium as that on the Founders Edition. Still, if you compare it to the plastic cover of other models like MSI’s Gaming X Trio, the GIGABYTE RTX 2070 Super Gaming OC feels more robust and durable. We also appreciate the stealth-like, color-neutral design since it won’t become much of an issue when you plan to color coordinate your rig.
When you look at the backplate, it’s also a plan and simple sight; however, we appreciate that this portion appears to be using anodized aluminum. It’s all black, except for the GIGABYTE logo printed in white fonts. You will see this right at the backplate’s center.
Its three fans, direct-touch sink, and four copper heat pipes all come together to form what the company calls the WINDFORCE 3X cooling system. As part of the system, the outer fans spin counter-clockwise, while the center fan moves clockwise.
Turbulence is kept to a minimum, generating less-competing airflow from abutting fans. When in idle mode, these fans stop spinning simultaneously via a feature that GIGABYTE refers to as the 3D Active Fan.
Enthusiasts who prefer maintaining lower idle temperatures can opt to disable the 3D Active Fan feature via the AORUS Engine software from GIGABYTE. But generally, the fans barely make any noise when the card is idle, so we prefer to keep these spinning even if the semi-passive mode is among the card’s most competitive assets.
But what draws most of our attention are the three fans that are present here. You can see where the WINDFORCE 3X cooler takes its name. The center and outer fans measure around 82 millimeters in diameter, but the fans on the latter spin in reverse to the previous. GIGABYTE claims that this specific movement of the fans decreased air turbulence to enhance heat dissipation from the cooler.
The front portion of the graphics card is where you’ll find the GIGABYTE logo, and this is also the only RGB portion on the entire graphics card. Overall, the RTX 2070 Super Gaming OC is pretty simple, but this could either be positive or negative, depending on how you view RGBs.
The six and eight-pin power connectors rotate 180-degrees to avoid issues with the form-fitted heat sink. It also goes for the special white LED lights fixed to the PCB light-up, which notifies you if there’s any problem with the auxiliary power.
We only saw the LEDs illuminate during boot, and interestingly, the GeForce RTX 2070 Founders Edition utilizes one eight-pin connector to meet the card’s 185 Watt ceiling. Since the design of GIGABYTE makes use of more power, it needs the additional six-pin input.
Compared to the GeForce RTX 2070 Founders Edition, the GIGABYTE card’s display outputs appeal to a more contemporary enthusiast. Instead of having two DP 1.4 interfaces, a USB Type-C, an HDMI 2.0b, and a rare DVI DL port, you will have three full-sized Display Port 1.4 connectors, a single HDMI 2.0, as well as Virtual Link support using the USB Type-C. Removing the DVI produces a free-flowing grille, yet the potential advantages of extra airflow are somewhat lost since the fins’ coolers move air vertically toward the bracket.
Extremely Durable for Overclocking
The RTX 2070 Super Gaming OC utilizes the 8 + 2 power phase layout for the MOSFET to operate at a reduced temperature. The graphics card also features load balancing for every MOSFET and a design that protects the card from high temperature. It comes with capacitors and chokes that are Ultra Durable-certified to provide superior performance and longer life span.
NVIDIA NV-Link Support
The GIGABYTE RTX 2070 Super Gaming OC supports NVIDIA NV-Link or NVIDIA SLI. This technology combines two identical GPUs using a GeForce RTX NV-Link Bridge to provide the ultimate 4K or VR gaming experience. Through AORUS Engine, you can also adjust the bridge’s light effect.
Metal Backplate for Protection
The GIGABYTE RTX 2070 Super Gaming OC features a metal backplate that is both aesthetic and protection for the card.
WINDFORCE 3X Cooling System
The WINDFORCE cooling system consists of three 82-millimeter blade fans, 3D active fan functionality, six composite copper heat pipes, and heat pipe direct touch. This unique cooling system effectively dissipates heat for higher performance while maintaining low temperatures.
Unique Blade Fans
The unique blade fans of the RTX 2070 Super Gaming OC distribute airflow with its triangular fan edge. It also features the 3D stripe curve on the surface of the fan to seamlessly guide airflow and efficiently enhance cooling.
Turbulent airflow is a common problem when a cooling system has multiple fans since these rotate in the same direction. When turbulence occurs, heat dissipation becomes less efficient. Alternate Spinning solves this problem by having the center fan sin in the opposite direction of the other two fans. It reduces turbulence while increasing the airflow pressure to improve the cooling system’s thermal performance.
3D Active Fan
The 3D Active Fan is functionality that performs semi-passive cooling. When your GPU is under low load or when playing low-power games, the fans stay off for you to enjoy complete silence while gaming during idle time or light operation.
Heat Pipes Direct Touch
The pure copper heat pipes feature a shape that leverages the direct contact area with the GPU for better heat transfer. The heat pipes also conceal the VRAM via a metal plate contact to guarantee efficient cooling.
Composite Heat Pipes
The six composite heat pipes merge phase transition and thermal conductivity for effective management of heat transfer between two solid interfaces. As a result, cooling capacity increases.

Using the Product
For the thermal performance of the GIGABYTE RTX 2070 Super Gaming OC, we’ve evaluated its temperature and thermal load. In addition to overclocking, the card offers an efficient triple fan WINDFORCE cooler that we noticed, gives off better cooling compared to the Founders Edition dual-axial fan style.
Since it also sports a dual-slot design with the regular PCB length, it was easy and more convenient to fit it inside any PC chassis. We loved that its cooler comes with heft heatsink that provided us with a bigger contact surface, and to top it off, its backplate comes with additional thermal pads for adequate thermal transfer on the card’s opposite side.
We noticed the fans on the Gaming OC run extremely quiet, even when under quite heavy loads. With that, the GIGABYTE RTX 2070 Super Gaming OC is completely inaudible. Throughout all the tests we made, the GPU’s temperature never rose above 70-degrees Celsius. Another notable aspect of it is that even with three fans working under loads, the WINDFORCE design from GIGABYTE kept them spinning quietly.
Additionally, the three fans stop spinning during idle time and under light load. They only start running when our GPU core was high. This feature helped the card stay cooler since the fans only started running when its load was increasing.
Aside from its thermal performance while overclocking, we noticed that it performs better than other high-end brands that are on the market today. Also, it features a bulky heatsink that provides a wider contact surface, and its backplate came with added thermal pads. With that, thermal transfer became more effective, and we were able to get lower temperatures out of this graphics card.
Ray Tracing effectively transformed our gaming experience into something new and unique, yet spectacular. While playing at 1080p with Ray Tracing at its maximum levels, we were able to enjoy our gaming experience to the fullest. It delivered crisp and realistic images with striking color and detail. Aside from the quality it gives, Ray Tracing also works smoothly while using this graphics card, so we didn’t experience any issues while playing.
Overall, the GIGABYTE RTX 2070 Super Gaming OC performed excellently.
