IP cameras have a lot of uses which make these very convenient and efficient devices today. One of its uses is to keep an eye out for your home, monitoring any suspicious activities that may occur. You can also watch your pets at home when you’re out, or even see if you’ve accidentally left something unattended or forgot to switch off your lights.
D-Link is known as one of the leading global providers of network solutions, and they’ve just recently come up with a highly improved Wi-Fi security camera for your home. This is the D-Link DCS-8100LH Wi-Fi Camera that lets you easily monitor your home at all times, wherever you are.
The device has a night vision feature together with a detection and motion feature that alerts you if there are any intruders around; the company claims that even in the dark, they will be detected.
Today, we’re going to be focusing on D-Link’s DCS-8100LH to see if it’s really as great as the company claims it to be. But before we get into its specs, features, and how well it performs, let’s take a look at what other items come with it in its package.
D-Link DCS-8100LH Review – What’s in the Box?
Just like with other D-Link products, the DCS-8100LH Wi-Fi Camera is set in a simple-looking box that has a similar layout with the packaging of other devices from D-Link. The box sports a blue and white theme, and right at the front of the box, you’ll see the image of the camera itself along with the company and product’s name. The names can be seen on the upper portion of the box while a few of its key features can be seen at the bottom.
If you flip the box and check underneath, you’ll find the serial number and barcodes; then at the back, there are additional information about the DCS-8100LH’s key features. On the right part shows the extra labels and features of the device’s parts and the left side displays a quick guide on how to setup your device.
Once you’re done looking at the details around the box, you can start checking what’s inside the package. Here, you’ll immediately find the product itself, together with a few documentation, a power adapter, a USB cable, and a couple of screws that you’ll need for installing.
D-Link DCS-8100LH Review – A Perfect Security Addition
The DCS-8100LH Wi-Fi Camera’s design is different compared to other cameras that are out in the market. It has a built-in stand and the camera can be tilted around 100° without it toppling over; this is because the device is heavy enough to act as a counter weight which is a good thing.
The DCS-8100LH can also be installed in various ways depending on your needs. With its 180° feature, you can easily rotate the stand around the device, allowing you to mount the entire assembly on a wall; with this, you can tilt the camera to have it leveled up.
We really liked the design attention since its micro USB connector linking to the AC power is also angled while the cable running beneath the stand has a gap. It’s nice how the cable is kept in place, leaving things neat which is something we really appreciated.
The DCS-8100LH Wi-Fi Camera also features a glossy white rectangular body, unlike its predecessor which is black and features a pucked-shape. Overall, the DCS-8100LH measures 2.7” x 5.4” with its rounded stand that provides excellent swiveling and tilting features. It can be set on a flat surface or be fixed on a ceiling or wall, depending on your preference.
One of the things that we really liked about the DCS-8100LH Wi-Fi Camera is its 180° image capture. This only means that the camera can provide you with a wider view of the area you want to keep an eye on. Other cameras that are available are limited to just 120° of image capture, so with the DCS-8100LH’s wide view, you won’t have to bother refocusing the camera on different corners of your home since one setting will suffice.
With the DCS-8100LH Wi-Fi Camera, you’ll be able to record and capture videos then store them via the Cloud; plus, its resolution of 1280 x 720p will give you outstandingly clear videos and photos.
The camera also has four times the digital zoom that will allow you to close in on anyone or anything that’s moving within your property. Another nice thing about the DCS-8100LH is that it also supports two-way audio communication between the device you’re using for monitoring, as well as the camera.
The DCS-8100 LH Wi-Fi Camera also has a built-in microphone, speaker, and an ICR or Infrared-Cut Removable Filter.
Outstanding View with the 180° Wide-Angle Lens
The unique 180° technology from D-Link lets you easily see everything on your camera. Compared to the common network cameras that are available, the DCS-8100LH Wi-Fi Camera provides you with the advantage of being able to see the whole room without any blind spots. It’s also really great that you can zoom in at 4x with the camera’s digital pinch to zoom function.
You’ll be able to clearly see your home even in the dark so you know what’s happening 24/7 with the camera’s integrated infrared LED.
You can also immediately receive alerts on your smart device when any sound or motion is detected.
Quick and Convenient Setup
You can setup the DCS-8100LH quickly using the company’s My D-Link app. You just need to download then install the application on your smart device, follow the step by step instructions, then you’re good to go. You can also setup your camera via Bluetooth.
The device features a two-way audio that allows you to speak with others using the integrated mic and speaker while watching them on your screen.
With My D-Link, you will be able to easily monitor your home even when you’re away. With the app, you’ll also get notifications and get to record moments directly to your smart device. Pretty convenient and useful so we’re really glad that you can use this app with the DCS-8100LH.
Installation & Setup
Setting up the DCS-8100LH Wi-Fi Camera is really simple since you’ll also be using the My D-Link app which is available on both iOS and Android. The app will be necessary to access a couple of things like playback, live view, and configure in the DCS-8100LH.
The camera supports 720p HD resolution and can locally record to a micro SD card in its integrated micro SD card slot. Its built-in LED illuminators lets the camera reach up to five meters in the dark, allowing you to clearly see what’s happening.
Before setting up your camera, install the My D-link app which can be downloaded from Google Playstore or the Apple Store (iOS) then make sure that your camera is ready before the installation process. When you’ve downloaded the app, you can begin setting up your camera by connecting the power adapter into a wall plug. W
ait until the power LED on the front or back of the camera blinks orange, and when you see this, tap “Ready” on D-Link’s mobile application then you’re all set. The My D-link application will also allow you to enable or disable the camera’s LED, trigger a video recording, take snapshots, alter the camera’s resolution, and even playback a recorded footage.
Aside from these, you can also customize notifications, upgrade firmware, set the infrared mode on, perform a two-way conversation, as well as customize the trigger events.
Using the Product
Of course, we tested the DCS-8100LH Wi-Fi Camera to see if it was really effective even in the dark. We were actually pleased with its performance and we really liked its 180° image capture since we were able to get a wider view of the area where we set up the camera.
The company’s claims were also true when they talked about the DCS-8100LH’s night vision capabilities; it was able to reach up to sixteen feet which is much better and more convenient compared to other cameras of the same category.
We also got to see a clear view of what was going on even in the dark and that was really pretty cool; this would actually be a perfect option if you want to keep your home safe at all times.
Another thing we appreciated was the My D-Link app which automatically notified us when any motion or sound was detected. This will all be based on the settings we configured and we were notified on our smart devices; so basically, this is more convenient than receiving actual email results so we give a thumbs-up for this app. Setting up the device was quite easy since everything you’ll need is included in the package.
You just need to plug in the device and it should be ready to use; of course, don’t forget to slip in your micro SD card in its designated slot, or sync it with your smart device. It’s also nice that we didn’t really have to bother doing any other thing before we could use the DCS-8100LH Wi-Fi Camera. All in all, the camera’s performance was excellent so we’re giving this a double thumbs-up.
