The Product

ASUS ROG STRIX X470-I GAMING Motherboard Review

The ASUS ROG STRIX X470-I gaming motherboard is an ITX board that has a design that is enough to catch the attention of gamers and system builders alike.

It has a contemporary and organized layout that’s well-thought-of, and a good example of this is its VRM heatsink. Despite being on the larger side, it isn’t detrimental to most of the cooling solutions around. Its RAM clearance is notable too, though we think that its CMOS battery placement could’ve been better.

There are a ton of internal headers integrated into the ASUS ROG STRIX X470-I gaming motherboard, yet its highlight is its daughterboard. Technically, it is an audio solution, PCH / M.2 heatsink, an M.2 slot, and a LED-lit RGB enhanced assortment. Hence, it is an excellent all-in-one solution that lets ASUS cram as many components into a single package.

Though with the back panel options, we think ASUS somehow skimped on this part of the board. The only display option that is available here is the HDMI 2.0 port while the rest are the 4 USB 3.0 ports, 2 USB 3.1 ports, 3 LED-lit audio ports, and a LAN port.

The ASUS ROG STRIX X470-I gaming motherboard is a board based on the X-470 chipset. The latest AMD X-470 chipset offers little improvements in combination with the brand new 12nm products. This 12nm processor generation can clock one notch higher, and the higher range frequencies at 4.2 – 4.3 will be feasible. It means that on the spectrum’s lower end, AMD is capable of increasing the base clock performance on the higher end portions.

The ASUS ROG STRIX X470-I gaming motherboard comes with support for the M.2 NVMe SSDs and USB 3.1; plus, it has a single full-reinforced PCIe x16 slot. Its audio has a Realtek 12-20 codec that helps enhance the input quality for streamers with 120dB SNR that’s compatible with the Sonic Studio. Also, you will have two DIMM slots that support a total of 32GB dual-channel memory.

The motherboard uses the Intel I211 AT Gigabit Ethernet for its wired network, while its wireless data network is Wi-Fi 802.11 a|b|g|n|ac. It supports dual-band frequency 2.4/5 GHz and MU-MIMO. In addition to this, the ASUS ROG STRIX X470-I gaming motherboard makes use of Bluetooth v4.2, 4.0LE, 3.0 + HS.

Graphics-wise, the ASUS ROG STRIX X470-I gaming motherboard uses the Radeon Vega 7th generation A-series APU for its GPU and HDMI 2.0 for its output.

Using the Product

When we installed the ASUS ROG STRIX X470-I gaming motherboard, we didn’t encounter any hiccups during the performance tests. And as expected, there were only slight variations to the results compared to other similar X-470 boards.

Among the motherboards we’ve tested, the ASUS ROG STRIX X470-I GAMING motherboard is one of the easiest to overclock. With the correct CPU voltage, we were able to achieve its maximum clock speed with stability.

When overclocking, the MOSFET coolers were able to lower the temperature of the motherboard and managed to keep everything at a nice low temperature. This motherboard is actually one of the coolest that we’ve seen when compared to other AMD X470-based motherboards. Most importantly, we also didn’t encounter any issues while doing our tests.

Overall, the ASUS ROG STRIX X470-I GAMING motherboard performed excellently, so we’re giving our thumbs up to it.

AI Suite III

ASUS continues and advances to package the AI Suite III with all its motherboards. This software lets you tune and monitor PC health from within the Windows environment, and the ASUS ROG STRIX X470-I gaming motherboard is no different.

The AI Suite III provides you with more utility compared to any other software package today. Also, ASUS’ fan-tuning is the most comprehensive and feature-filled software package that’s bundled with a motherboard. This software comes with functions and features that allow automated performance tuning, power saving, manual performance tuning, and fan creation. Not only that, but it also lets you create overclocking profiles necessary for a per-application basis.

It’s also possible to always see the PC health monitoring feature at the bottom portion of the app window. Here, each of the monitored categories has its tiled division that you can expand by pressing on the option on the bottom right corner highlighted in red. Once expanded, you can have more details available for your needs.

5-Way optimization

Its automatic overclocking function is distinct since it doesn’t only set variables according to the manufacturer’s preconfigured profile. Instead, this software lets you set the overclocking target, as well as the parameters to allow the system to acquire it. It’s also great that you can manage the validation method for whether or not its setting is balanced or not.

This automatic overclocking feature is what the company calls the 5-Way optimization. You can tell the software your clock frequency goal while simultaneously noting what the temperature and voltage parameters should be. As for fan capabilities like the RPM range, these are immediately detected then tuned together with the CPU clocks.

Fan Controls

The fan controls are another part of the software that is highly notable. It doesn’t only autotune fan performance but lets every user physically detail the fan locations in the chassis. Also, it produces custom names for the locations to make things more convenient.

Shifting the speed of fan changes is controlled via the software’s fan smoothing. It’s the feature that lets you alter how fast the fan speed shifting occurs based on the system’s temperature.

UEFI BIOS

The UEFI BIOS used for ASUS ROG STRIX X470-I GAMING motherboard has the same layout with the recent AMD motherboards. For its interface, you can choose from two options: EZ Mode with simple options for beginners, and the Advanced mode. The previous has more settings for those who want to configure their motherboard further.

You can choose from eight main menus with the Ai Tweaker, which is the most vital menu if you are overclocking. The BCLK frequency is at 100 by default. The Monitor menu is where you check the accuracy of the temperatures, RPM, and voltages of your motherboard. The Boot menu consists of a lot of useful options for your storage devices.

It’s worthy to note that we didn’t encounter any error while using the UEFI BIOS. It worked excellently with the ASUS ROG STRIX X470-I GAMING motherboard.
