Today, a lot of mini speakers usually get oversized amounts of attention. This is because tons of people tend to appreciate portable speakers that offer big sounds despite the small size and cheaper price. The Xtreme 2 from JBL is the latest product from the company alongside their well-regarded portable and big Bluetooth speakers.
While the speaker isn’t as big as the usual boombox of the past, it has been designed to produce just as much power and sound. JBL decided to upgrade the Xtreme 2’s drivers so the speakers have bigger, more powerful, and much better bass compared to its predecessors. Another great thing about the speaker is that JBL made it completely waterproof.
We all know that having waterproof devices, especially speakers, has its advantages; so even if you are someone who’s into watersports or doesn’t regularly visit the pool, a weatherproof speaker is more versatile and better than your usual plug-in ones.
If you’re starting to get interested in the JBL Xtreme 2 and want to know if it’s something worth purchasing, we’ve got a list of its features, performance, and other useful details to that’ll help you decide if this speaker is the right thing for you.
JBL Xtreme 2 Review – What’s in the Box?
The JBL Xtreme 2 is kept in a rectangular-shaped box that comes with a plastic handle at the top. It’s a convenient addition to the package so we’re glad that JBL thought of adding this. Speaking of the top part of the box, aside from its handle, you won’t see anything written on this portion and it just exhibits a plain orange shade.
Each side of the box features an image of the product, yet the good thing is that they featured different angles of it. One of the sides features a short list of all the key features of the device. Other than that, you won’t find any other vital information written about the speaker.
When you open the box, you will see the Xtreme 2 speaker wrapped in a thick piece of plastic. JBL made sure that their speaker would be kept safe from any unwanted damages that may occur during transit. The device is also surrounded by Styrofoam for added protection and there’s even more plastic up ahead. JBL has done a good job to make sure that their speakers will remain in top condition when these arrive to your doorstep.
Moving on, you’ll find another plastic in the package which contains a strap that can be linked to the speaker; keep in mind that this will be extremely useful when you need to transport the Xtreme 2 to a different location. All in all, the box includes the JBL Xtreme 2 itself, one power adaptor, a strap, a safety sheet, one quick start guide, and the warranty card.
JBL Xtreme 2 Review
Just like its predecessors, the Xtreme 2 is guarded by a thick fabric mesh. It displays a cylindrical-shaped body that is covered in a type of fabric with apparent bass radiators on the sides. We have the black colored Xtreme 2 and it looks really nice and sleek for a little speaker.
To keep the device in place, the company included two rubber feet right at the bottom. It’ll also help keep the speaker upright despite it being on the narrow side. When speaking of its physical features, the Xtreme 2 from JBL has a good size that measures 9 inches wide, 4.8 inches deep, and 5 inches tall while its overall weight is 4.7 pounds.
It may be slightly heavier and bigger but the Xtreme 2 speaker is still portable and easy to bring around. The company included a simple carrying strap for the device that can be used to strap then carry the speakers around.
All the ports on the device are hidden beneath a compartment located at the back of the device. The compartment is slightly challenging to open which is most probably due to the IPX7 waterproofing. Having the speakers waterproof makes it even better since you can set the device by the pool, lake, or the beach, to fully enjoy your favorite tunes.
The speaker’s transducer driver has been upgraded by the company; they have also decided to work on the audio power which was 40 Watts in the Xtreme speakers, making it a good 50 Watts with the Xtreme 2.
There are those who say that this device produces much louder sounds compared to the Xtreme. Passive radiators have shifted to the 3D passive radiators which helps produce a much deeper and excellent sound from its woofers. This is so you can acquire good bass despite the device being smaller.
JBL has shuffled with the sizes of their drivers, so now, you can expect to have 17-millimeter drivers compared to the 63-millimeter ones that are present on the JBL Xtreme. 35-millimeter tweeters were also present on the Xtreme but for improvement, these were resized to 20-millimeter tweeters for the Xtreme 2.
The JBL Xtreme 2 is a functional and convenient device that allows for hands-free use with active amplification. The speaker has bi-amping and a built-in audio amplifier with 40W for its nominal output power.
It makes use of a rechargeable lithium polymer battery with a 1000 mAh capacity. Its recharge time reaches up to 3.5 hours, while its total run time reaches a total of 15 hours. One convenient characteristic of the device is that it gives you the option to use it as a wireless or wired speaker.
The Xtreme 2 is generally a stereo-type speaker with frequency responses of 55 to 20,000Hz, as well as 80dB for its signal-to-noise ratio. The speaker is IPX7 compliant, has active amplification with an RMS or channel output power of 20 Watts, and a two-way crossover channel.
The JBL Xtreme 2 speakers come with a built-in 1000mAh lithium ion battery which lets you enjoys up to 15 hours of music playtime. It’s a convenient device that lets you enjoy long hours of music listening, but if you ever need to recharge your speakers, you can easily do this via the USB port.
You don’t have to worry about your speaker whenever you take it to the beach or pool. The Xtreme 2 is completely waterproof and is IPX7-rated, which means it is splash-proof; plus, it can handle light rain and light water splashes. It can also be submerged in water that is a meter deep for a maximum of 30 minutes.
JBL Bass Radiator
The Xtreme 2 has dual passive radiators that deliver powerful audio, making this full, loud, and clear for you to enjoy.
The fabric material used for the Xtreme 2 is extremely durable; plus, it also features a rugged rubber housing that keeps the speaker protected even if you take it to other different places. Additionally, the speaker features a durable metal base and integrated hooks.
Using the Product
To see if the company’s claims on the Xtreme 2 are true, we tested its sounds, battery, waterproof features, as well as its connectivity.
Of course, this is the most important factor when it comes to speakers. With two 2.75-inch woofers and two 20-millimeter for the low end and the treble, the Xtreme 2 provides top-quality audio for everyone’s enjoyment. This combination delivers high-quality sounds that gives off full sounding bass. And even if the bass was loud and powerful, it did not overpower the high notes and vocals.
There is an excellent balance between the bass and treble which effectively separates the sounds while preventing this from getting distorted. The most impressive thing about the Xtreme 2 is its bass delivery.
The speaker can also select the most important basslines and make these roll when it comes to a wide range of music genres. For rock and party tunes, this speaker is an excellent choice.
Now for the battery life, JBL claims that the Xtreme2 can be fully charged in 3.5 hours. Once done, the portable Bluetooth speaker can last up to, 15 hours of audio play. We found that this claim holds true and were able to easily listen to music for up to 15 hours and infact even longer on a single charge. Of course, this will only depend on the volume you set when you play music; in our case, we’ve only used it between 50 to 70 percent.
The JBL Xtreme 2 uses Bluetooth v3.2 and has exceptional range when no obstacles are present. With a steady connection, we were able to get around 20m feet away from the speaker and we were still able to hear it play music. In an environment with obstacles, we were able to reach a distance of 15m which is similar to most Bluetooth speakers that we’ve previously tried.
JBL Connect App
Together with the Connect +, the JBL Connect App allows you to wirelessly connect over a hundred JBL Connect + enabled speakers. This is to elevate and boost your listening experience, turning the party to a much bigger one.
The Connect app is available for both iOS and Android users which will allow you readily manage the speakerphone functions and audio feedback sounds. The Connect application itself is primarily useful for updating the firmware and it is also present to readily switch the purpose of the play / pause button to to activate the voice assistant.
The JBL Xtreme 2 is probably one of the most striking and finely-made portable Bluetooth speakers today. It’s not necessarily all about its physical appearance – it sports a large but nice cylindrical body that is omnidirectional – but it is able to deliver excellent and clear sounds even when playing music with heavy bass.
When it comes to its bass delivery, the Xtreme 2 gives off a really nice and clean sound to it; it also gives a lot of power so you’ll completely enjoy good music and powerful sounding bass.
Its battery life is quite notable since you can listen to your favorite music for longer periods. Another great thing about the Xtreme 2 is that it is completely waterproof, so you don’t need to worry about the speaker getting dunked in the pool or splashed with water when partying out in the open.
The integrated noise-canceling mic makes it a highly effective speaker and it also comes with a USB Type-A port which will allow you to use the Xtreme 2 to charge other devices. Overall, we’re extremely impressed with the JBL Xtreme 2: it looks good, sounds great, and you don’t have to worry about it getting wet due to it being waterproof.
Also, if we ended up forgetting to charge the device for around a week, there’s still a little chance of it draining which is really good.
Overall, the JBL Xtreme 2 is a speaker that we’d highly recommend, especially to those who want to have a waterproof, durable, and nice-sounding speaker that will last you a long time for audio play.
