If you are searching for durable and quality wireless earbuds, you should first ask yourself if you want them completely wireless or tethered. Though no matter what your answer is, Jaybird has you covered when it comes to this.
Together with the release of their very first fully wireless earbuds, the Jaybird Run, the company also released a new and better Freedom 2 which enhances their already well-known and highly favored Freedom wireless headphones for sports. One of the most notable improvements over the previous model is their newly combined cord management system that the company has referred to as the Speed-Fit. This feature, combined with numerous fins / tip that is included with the Freedom 2, allows you to enjoy a quick, comfortable, and personalized fit.
Let’s take a look at what great features the Freedom 2 has for us and check out what’s inside the box of the headphones.
Jaybird Freedom 2 Review – Whats in the Box?
With the sleek packaging of Jaybird, you will easily see the micro-sized earbuds on display and there, you’ll notice that the Freedom 2 features one of the smallest sized fins / tips around. When you remove the top-most layer of the container, you will see the carrying case, the quick start guide, and a couple of accessories for the Freedom 2.
Just like with every other product from Jaybird, finding the best fit is vital. To make this possible, the company added four-sized variants of combined fins / tip; aside from these, Jaybird also included other essentials such as a carrying case, a charging clip, shirt clip, and the accompanying 2.0 USB charging cable. Unlike before, their cables and charging clips are no longer tethered so you can readily charge while on the go.
Jaybird Freedom 2 Review – Music on the Go
The Freedom 2 from Jaybird is considered as one of the lightest earbuds available in the market today. It is also known for being comfortable to wear even for longer periods. And just like with a lot of earbuds, finding the right fit for you can be a bit of a challenge. Yet for the Freedom 2, Jaybird provides you with numerous wearing options, and with the new technology called Speed Fit, the whole process is undeniably quicker than before. The quick start guide doesn’t only offer great tips to ensure a comfortable and perfect fit, but the My-Sound application also provides a couple of helpful guidelines.
Its Speed Fit cord control system also lets you easily switch from the over-ear fit to the under-ear fit while simultaneously securing the excess cord in seconds. This will ensure that the excess cord is set perfectly at the back of your head. If you want to wear the Freedom 2 using the under-ear fit, the Speed Fit system together with the shirt clip will keep the cord fixed and secured in place. The company also ships a total of four pairs of combination fins and ear tips, allowing for a secure and stable fit, as well as great stability while exercising. What’s even better is that the design is water resistant and is also made to fit perfectly around bike helmets; plus, there is also a useful built-in cable management feature that allows you easily and seamlessly slip in a plastic adjuster along the cable.
For the mic compartment and three-button inline remote, you can find these along the right portion of the cable. The Freedom 2 also features a central multifunction button that covers call management and playback; it is kept between the volume down and up buttons that also work as track navigation buttons when pressed longer. The buttons also feature additional functions when on a call – the volume down button works to mute while the volume up button lets you easily switch between calls. When it comes to the charging clip, it can charge your earphones without having to be connected to the charging cable. The earphones also feature an internal battery that can prolong the battery life of the Freedom 2 by four hours.
The Freedom 2 from Jaybird is known as an in-ear style piece that has an impedance of 16 Ohm; the audio format for this is 16 bit Stereo and its response bandwidth is about 20 Hz to 20 kHz. The built-in MEMS mic is omni directional and has an ultra-low power with – 38 dB + – 3 dB. It is fairly light at 15.5 g without the tips or fins, and its 60 mAh Lithium-Polymer battery is good for four hours of playtime; and with the additional charging clip, you will have an additional four hours for playtime.
The Jaybird Freedom 2 is suitable for any type of Bluetooth device such as the Apple Watch, iPad, iPod Touch, iPhone, Android, iPad, Android Wear Smartwatches, Mac, PC and gaming devices. The Jaybird application is also compatible with the iOS9 and above, as well as Android 4.4 and above.
The Freedom 2 is one of the smallest earbuds available and it provides you with a personalised fit in a snap. This is with the help of the Speed Fit-integrated cord management plus the fins and tips that are available. These are tight, light, and super comfortable that you’ll forget that you’re actually wearing them.
Water Resistant and Sweat Proof
The materials used to create the earphones make it a great and durable piece which is very essential when you’re on the go. These are sweat proof and water resistant so you don’t need to worry about getting the earphones wet.
Comfort and Fit
You don’t have to worry about the Freedom 2 slipping off while you run or exercise; the earphones will stay in place because of the Speed Fit and super ergo fins / tips that are locked in.
Increase the treble or boost the bass using the Jaybird app to get the best sound. You can also save your sound profile right on the buds, or even share and name it based on your preferences.
Eight Hours of Nonstop Playtime
You’ll get four hours on the earphones and an additional four from the included charging clip. The Freedom 2 is also convenient since it lets you listen while you’re charging, so there’s definitely non-stop playback for you while on the go.

How it Performs
When it comes to the battery life of the device, there isn’t much of a difference compared to the other Jaybird earphones, though the Freedom 2 lasts much longer and allows for prolonged usage. The company claims that you can get a full eight hours of playback from the earphones but you will need the included charging clip or carrying case to achieve this. Without the charging clip, you will get a total of over four hours of continuous playback on maximum volume. When you lower the volume at around 50%, you will definitely extend your playback time a bit more which is convenient when you’re on the go.
As for its Bluetooth performance, we can say that this is very good. The Freedom 2 that was connected to our smartphone responded instantly when we switched it on, and we received a voice feedback informing that the device is on and what the remaining battery level is. The earphones will also link you to your device via Bluetooth 4.1 so you’ll receive the common wireless range of about thirty-three feet or ten meters. Pretty good in our opinion and this range was true for us; though of course, just like with every Bluetooth-connected device, the range and connectivity will still depend on elements such as obstacles in the surroundings. But all in all, its performance was great.
We’re highlighting the Freedom 2’s excellent and personalised fit but you’ll also get impressive sound quality from these earphones. Once you find and test for the perfect wing or tip combination, the earphones will fit snugly, securely, and comfortably to your ears, and does a good job at blocking any form of surrounding noise. Their new cable sizing system also works efficiently: you can just slip on the earphones, take the two plastic rectangles, then either push or pull them to alter the size.
How to Use
Pairing the Freedom 2 with your device is really easy so you don’t need to have any technical skills for this. Remember that wireless devices with Bluetooth capabilities should be paired first with the earphones to link and allow these to communicate.
To pair the Freedom 2, ensure that the Bluetooth is enabled on your music device then hold the power button until the LED flashes green or red. This is to initiate the pairing mode since the device was “off” previously. After this, you can open the Bluetooth list on the device then choose the “Jaybird Freedom 2” option. If you’re asked for a certain PIN code, enter 1234 or 0000.
With the company’s current product lineup, the Freedom 2 from Jaybird has sounds that are fully customizable, and you can manage this via their My Sound app which is available on Google Play or the App Store. If you aren’t really sure about what you prefer, the My Sound feature from Jaybird lets you listen to a lot of preset options to select from. It also allows you to view the battery level, locate the in-ears when lost, and even customise the sound profile.
The app also provides you with a wide selection of playlists for different situations and you can even join communities simply by liking various equalizer presets or different playlists; you can also create your own and share these to the community. The best thing that we liked about this is that it is completely free of charge. The presets are also great ways to customise the sounds to your preferences, and by default, the Jaybird Freedom 2 features a flat sound profile that can be readily changed to one of Jaybird’s available presets; you can also choose those created by a much wider community.
The Jaybird Freedom 2 earphones are a set of powerful Bluetooth pieces that features extra bass response for better listening. The earphones also have excellent qualities and we think that these sound pretty awesome while also having a nice and customised design.
We give Jaybird a thumbs up for their Speed Fit cable management system which makes the process of loosening and tightening the earphones easier and more convenient. So if you’re searching for new, quality-made, and great sounding earphones when you’re on the go, we highly recommend the Freedom 2 from Jaybird since it is really one of the best options available.
