Blue Yeti Microphone Review – Whats in the Box?

After inspecting the box, we opened this to see the product itself but you won’t see the mic right away since Blue ensured to keep the product safe and well-protected to avoid any form of damages while transporting the device. We had to pull out another plain white box upon opening the primary package, but when we did, we first saw the power cable right at the top then beneath this was the Yeti set in between sturdy and durable divisions made from EPS foam.

Under the divisions, you will find the microphone’s instruction manual where more information about the Yeti can be read. Aside from the details, the manual also provides you with a thorough explanation of how to properly install the microphone and also more information about the different modes of recording that are present.

The Product

Blue Yeti Microphone Review – A Fantastic Product from the Best in the Biz!

If you thoroughly look at the Yeti microphone, the device itself features an all-metal exterior which looks really cool, classy, and sleek in our opinion. When you connect this to the base, the microphone ends up weighing a beefy 3.4 pounds in total; though it is quite on the heavy side, Yeti is still a great microphone that produces exquisite sounds and it isn’t the type that you would be carrying around like you would with a standard mic.

The Yeti is integrated with a 3.5-millimeter headphone jack that lets you listen to anything that you are recording in real time; it also ensures that there are no latency delays so you basically won’t hear any notes three seconds after you’ve played your recording. Also, you will be able to adjust your headphones’ volume via the control area located at the front portion of the Yeti microphone.

The microphone is also well-built since its exterior is almost completely made of metal, except for the thumb screws and knobs that links the microphone to its base. As for the base, this part itself is also made from metal, giving the product some great heft to it. This heft is accompanied by rubberized non-skid pads located at the base of the mic, so when you set the Yeti down, you won’t have to worry about it sliding here and there, or accidentally knocking it down since it stays fixed in place.

When you look at the base of the microphone, you will find a mini USB port, a threaded base, and a headphone jack; its threaded base allows you to connect the microphone to any regular mic stand, or if you have a shock mount, you can also put the Yeti on it to further maintain and balance the microphone, preventing it from creating unnecessary noise when you accidentally bump the device.

For its headphone jack, it accepts the regular 3.5-millimetre headphones and also has a real monitoring option – this only means that you can easily hear yourself through your headphones in real time and it also sounds exactly like the output sent to your listeners.  We consider this a really good feature since it prevents you from having to constantly ask if you can be heard well and clearly. Not only that, but you can also adjust the volume of your headphones using the front knob of the Yeti; plus, it also features a LED-lit mute button that’s located just above it.

On the opposite portion of the Yeti, you will find two more additional knobs which are specifically for gain and pattern selection. The microphone features four varying sound-capture patterns and you can select any one of these depending on your preferences and how you’re actually utilising the device. If you are sitting right in front of the microphone for voice capturing, you can opt for the cardioid mode for better quality; the stereo mode is also present and this is great for recording live music sessions. If you’re attending or hosting a round-table discussion, you can choose the omnidirectional mode to record all the voices that surround the mic; there is also a two-way pattern for activities such as interviews where your subject and yourself are sitting across each other while conversing. The Yeti’s gain knob controls the loudness that is captured by the microphone: remember, it is much easier to actually produce a soft and low sound compared to salvaging a distorted recording to extreme loudness.

When it comes to its specifications, the Blue Yeti Microphone requires a power of 5V 150 mA; its sample rate is 48kHz and it has a bit rate 16-bit. The microphone’s frequency response ranges from 20 Hz up to 20 kHz and its maximum SPL is 120dB. With the stand extended, the Blue Yeti microphone’s dimensions are 4.72 inches x 4.92 inches x 11.61 inches; when it comes to its heaviness, the Yeti weighs about 1.2 pounds. Additionally, the Blue Yeti microphone features the Blue-proprietary 14 millimeter condenser capsule, as well as four polar patterns specifically Bidirectional,  Omnidirectional, Cardioid, and Stereo.

When it comes to the Blue Yeti microphone’s system requirements, you can use the microphone for both Windows and Macintosh. For Windows, Yeti will work on Windows 7, 8, or 10. For its USB connection, you can use the 1.1, 2.0 or newer USB version.  The required RAM is at least 64MB. When using the microphone with a Mac you will need to use Mac OSX 10.4.11 or higher versions with a 1.1/2.0 USB.

The Blue Microphone Yeti is actually a great device for any form of application; you can utilise this for professional podcasting, gaming, music recordings, and also for video audio. Not only is it versatile for a lot of applications, but it also captures rich and very clean sounds that you’ll surely appreciate.

Another great thing about Yeti is that you can readily start your recording sessions since the mic is primarily designed to provide you with a convenient and seamless workflow. You can also set this up easily with the desktop stand that is included, or you can directly link the Yeti to a mic stand; also, you can readily adjust the headphones’ volume, microphone gain, mute / unmute, and the pick-up pattern with easy to access controls. Moreover, you can also record with ease using the mic’s side-address operation by simply speaking, playing, or singing into the mic on the side where you can find Blue’s logo to fully capture the pro sounds.

Setting up the Yeti is easy since you just need to plug the mic into your PC’s USB port using the included USB cable. Just calibrate this via the computer’s operating system then you’re good to go. It’s also great that the company provides a driver-free operation for the Yeti microphone which we think is really convenient. When it comes to the compatibility of Yeti, it works with Windows XP Home & Professional, Windows Vista, Windows 10, Windows 7, Windows 8 which includes 8.1, as well as the Mac OS X (10.4.11 or a higher version); it also requires a minimum RAM of 64 MB.

When it comes to recording, you’ll have complete control when it comes to the Yeti microphone since it features studio controls for pattern selection, headphone volume, microphone gain, as well as instant mute. These useful controls will put you in charge of the whole recording process and you will definitely have full control over everything during the recording process. If there’s any form of feedback or distortion while recording a really loud source, you can just adjust the Yeti’s sensitivity using the gain control to avoid this; or if you decide to take a quick break right in the middle of a podcast session, you can simply utilise the instant mute button to do this.

Lastly, the innovative design of the Yeti microphone is essential to make your recording process easier: you can simply pivot and adjust the mic based on the sound’s source which greatly optimises the quality of sounds produced; when you’ve finally achieved your preferred angle, you can just tighten the provided knobs to secure the mic in place. If you need to bring the mic elsewhere, Yeti can easily be folded or removed from the base to mount it straight on the mic stand.

How it Performs

When speaking of the quality of the sounds produced, we can definitely say that the Blue Yeti microphone really delivers. It has a recording sample rate of 16-bit and 48 KHz which is excellent especially if you’re a streamer or podcaster since it provides outstanding results. Audio that is recorded with this microphone is much more similar to what you can hear from a professionally recorded video from YouTube, CD, or from a video game; it does not record gritty or hollow sounds which is something common in cheap microphones, and it also sounds more natural and clean as well.

During our tests, we set the microphone to the omnidirectional pattern mode and it worked really great; this is a suggested mode especially if you’re someone who tends to move around while recording. We tried out the other settings and it actually performed well so we’re giving two thumbs up for the Yeti when it comes to its performance. For voice recordings such as podcast, this microphone from Blue is the ideal product to use. It’s a very versatile plug and display piece which allows you to utilise the mic with any computer of your choice; and even if you decide to utilise the microphone on a completely different computer than yours, it will function adequately without any issues.

As for the sound quality of the Blue Microphone Yeti, it records highly exceptional and crystal clear sounds especially for voice-overs; so basically, it’s just as good as when you add mixers and equalizations to your recordings. However, you should make sure that the area you are recording in is soundproof, especially if you’re working on a professional recording because just like other microphones, Yeti also slightly picks up background noises – something that you shouldn’t really be concerned with since this is something usual when it comes to mic recordings. It is also a great mic to use for communication so your video and voice calls sound great all the time.

How to Use

Blue ensured that their Yeti microphone has a very easy setup and they claim that its installation process is quick and effortless. You just need to plug the device into your computer and that’s it. Since this Yeti microphone that we have does not require any software, we really appreciated it since there weren’t any hassles of installing any additional software during the setup process.  We’re using Windows 10 on our computer so we just connected the microphone and the driver just automatically installed; you’ll just have to wait for a bit then you’re on your way. After you’ve plugged the microphone, simply set it as your main recording device if this did not happen automatically during the process of installation.

Conclusion

After trying and testing the Yeti USB microphone from Blue, we can definitely say that it is something for anyone who is interested in doing their own voice-overs, creating their own podcasts, adding singing voices to their own music recordings, or even engaging in conference calls and more. The Yeti also features a sleek, cool, and somewhat classic style, an excellent quality build, as well as a good price which makes it one of the most attractive and eye-catching microphones available today. With its simple plug and play design, the microphone allows every podcaster to create great sounding content even when they’re on the go; plus, there are even four varying audio patterns that you can readily choose from with just a quick turn of a knob.

Aside from its build and quality, we also really liked that the Yeti is a very affordable microphone despite having a set of great and balanced features, as well as style. So if you’re a game streamer who wants to have a clear and top-quality microphone in your assortment of peripherals, or an amateur recording artist who is searching for a good value yet highly versatile mic, then the Yeti microphone from Blue is definitely the best option for you. We also highly recommend Yeti if some of your activities usually include field recordings, voice work, podcasts, and a lot of conference calls.
