While the feature of HDR or high dynamic range is more common in televisions, it is now starting to take off as a prominant feature in PC gaming monitors. However, BenQ always steps up their game and has introduced their newest ultrawide curved monitor with the EX3501R. It boasts of HDR support which is something new for these range of devices.
Is it good? Does it really perform effectively and notably? Today, we’re here to check if this monitor from BenQ does all that, and if it’s something worth investing in for you to enjoy your PC experience.
BenQ EX3501R Ultrawide Monitor Review – What’s in the Box?
The BenQ EX3501R comes in a huge gray box that is thick enough to protect the monitor. In front of it, you’ll get to see the top view image of the product which seems like BenQ is really highlighting the EX3501R’s curvature; aside from the image, the company’s logo and the product’s name can be seen in this area. Just below the names, you’ll see a couple of features written there.
On the sides of the box, you will see a couple of basic details about the EX3501R like its size, eye-care technology, model number and all the key features such as HDR, curvature, UWQHD 3440 x 1440, 100Hz, Low Blue Light technology, Brightness Intelligence Plus, and AMD Free Sync.
When you open the box and lift its cover, you will find a tray made of styrofoam which has divisions for each item. Other items you’ll find included in the package is the software, a quick start guide, as well as basic installation instructions. You’ll also receive a couple of cables that are necessary for installing. It’s nice that BenQ included an extension cable so you can easily connect this to a wall plug.
Once you pull out the tray, you’ll finally get to see the monitor itself with its screen facing the base of the box. It is also placed in its own tray made of styrofoam which keeps the monitor protected on all sides. The EX3501R is wrapped with a piece of white plastic and once you remove this, a piece of insulation foam covering the screen will be seen.
We really liked the packaging that the company used for this monitor since it shows that they really care about the condition of their items. For the monitor itself, you will have to peel the plastic from its sides; these were included to prevent the monitor from acquiring unnecessary scratches and dents while inside the box.
BenQ EX3501R Ultrawide Monitor Review
Most of BenQ’s gaming devices already feature functional and discreet designs, yet this specific model takes sophistication to the next level. The chrome and silver materials add to its aesthetic touch while its thin dual stage bezels do not pose as any form of distraction to the stunning 35-inch view space.
One of the most notable features of the EX3501R is its thick bottom bezel that holds the OSD buttons and the sensor that’s just beneath it. The latter discovers ambient lighting in your room, allowing for the BIF or Brightness Intelligence Feature to relatively correct the color temperature. We have already come across this feature on the EW2770QZ and it sure does have its benefits and advantages.
The design proportions of the BenQ EX3501R is not as invasive as most of its competitors since it only takes up about 12 inches of depth. We can say that the EX3501R can be mounted using its VESA mounts because of its slightly gentle 1,800r arch.
The BenQ EX3501R’s connectivity suite is well-equipped for almost all situations since it can accommodate even the latest input standards of today. Its layout includes the Display Port 1.4 and 2 USB 3.1 ports for your convenience.
You’ll also get the USB C port which can easily switch to DP alt mode or transmit data to turn your USB-C computer as the host device. For quick and easy arrangement, its I / O panel features a removable cover which makes it easier to cover all connectors to give you a neat and clean setup.
Its metal stand is adequately sturdy so it allows for a degree of adjustments to make the EX3501R comfortable for use, even with vertical adjustments of 60 millimeters, plus a tilt adjustment that’s around -5 to 20°.
When it comes to assembling the device, it’s basically tool-less and you’ll get to easily connect the monitor to its stand without needing a screwdriver. This makes the whole installation process a lot easier while ensuring that the EX3501R is secure enough to not fall off once connected.
The bezels surrounding the screen’s edges aren’t really that thin, but these don’t add up to the additional girth to this already big monitor. BenQ calls these the ultra-slim bezels which are designed to let you set two or more EX3501R monitors next to each other for an extensive experience with a seamless field of view.
The size of the BenQ EX3501R’s screen is a good 35 inches that comes with a VA panel. It has a 21:9 aspect ratio and a curvature of 1,800R, while its brightness is 300 cd/m2 + 8-bit for its color. The refresh rate is 100Hz, its pixel pitch is 0.238 millimeters, while the EX3501R has a 4ms GtG for its response time.
The BenQ EX3501R has a native contrast of 2,500:1 and 3440 x 1440 for its maximum resolution. Viewing angles are 178 / 178 and it also features a LED backlight which is pretty good. The monitor also features 16.7 million display colors and a color gamut of 100% sRGB. PPI and DCR are 103 & 20,000,000 : 1. Its display area is 819.41 [H] x 345.89 [V] mm while its video bandwidth is 600 MHz.
The EX3501R’s power supply is at 90 ~ 264AC and when switched on, it consumes 63 Watts. When it’s left on power-saving mode, the BenQ EX3501R’s consumes just 0.5 Watts which is similar to when the device is switched off.
This monitor has a measurement of 504.02 x 833.95 x 224.08 millimeters [H x W x D] with a net weight of 10.4 kilograms and gross weight of 16.5 kilograms. Color temperatures that are available include the Reddish, Bluish, Normal, or User modes and it can accommodate a total of 18 languages.
The EX3501R can be wall mounted and for convenience, it comes with a three-year warranty.

The AMD Free Sync is another technology that eliminates image tearing, broken frames, as well as choppy gameplay for you to have a lot of fun when gaming. This results in an extremely smooth gaming experience which is something that every gamer would love to have.
If you own a graphics card that is compatible with AMD Free Sync, then you can completely remove screen tearing and stuttering. All you have to do is synchronize the refresh rate between the monitor and your graphics card.
B.I. + Tech (Brightness Intelligence & Technology)
When you decide to binge watch your favorite show or indulge yourself in a good classic movie, it’s quite common to neglect and forget that ambient lighting is vital for influencing your viewing experience. This is because the strong distinctness between lights from displays and ambient light can cause eye strain.
Just like in bright environments, your eyes are required to work harder to prevent glare due to reflection. Also, when you have an extremely bright display in a dim room, your eyes will end up utilizing more energy to be able to focus.
So as time passes, your eyes will strain every time you watch on monitors; and in some cases, you might even face more severe issues such as blurred vision or headaches.
BenQ’s exclusive Brightness Intelligence or B.I. Technology & B.I Plus Technology are some of the smartest screen modifiers today. These instantly adjust your display quality to best fit and accommodate your surroundings, offering you the best viewing enjoyment without you having to worry about causing harm to your eyes.
The company’s B.I. Plus Technology does not only identify ambient light levels, but it also detects color temperature in your viewing area. This allows the EX3501R to instantly adjust the on-screen color temperature and brightness for your viewing comfort. What you view on screen won’t get overly exposed while enhancing and improving the details in dark spots to retain a visible degree of intensity and clarity.
Here are some of the features of the B.I+ Tech:
Less Eye Strain in All Lighting Environment
The Brightness Plus Technology detects your environment’s ambient light levels and the color temperature in your environment. The ambient light sensor automatically sets the proper brightness based on your usage time. With this, you get to enjoy the highest quality display to prevent eye strain and protect your eyes even if you watch the monitors for hours.
Picture Perfect with Original Colors
Brightness Intelligence Plus Technology identifies your skin content to balance its display color. This ensures that bright areas don’t get overexposed while the dark ones maintain clear visible. This keeps the most authentic details and colors of images displayed on the monitor.
Blue Light Filter with Excellent Quality
Since we now live in a digital world, blue light is even more harmful to the eyes. Blue light is the strongest visible light which enters your eyes when you stare at the monitor for long periods of time. This causes damage to the macula in the retina which could lead to dangerous eye-related conditions.
If you’re a video enthusiast who watches on monitors a lot, BenQ has created two kinds of technologies to keep your eyes protected; these include the BenQ Low Blue Light Technology and BenQ Low Blue Light Plus Technology. The former removes blue light to reduce the risks of eye damages while the latter filters radiation to lessen its impact on the eyes.
With this technology lessens the damage while also keeping the quality of the images without shifting its color.
If you’re someone who becomes anxious due to flashing lights, or if it’s something that causes you distress or irritation, you tend to avoid any form of blinking sources. However, the typical LCD screens have a flicker rate of 250 times per second, and since these are not perceived by the naked eye, flicker carelessly causes great stress to your eyes.
Flicker and the utilization of PWM dimming processes have been associated with eye fatigue, headaches, eye strain, and nausea, though remember that not all of these side effects are the same for each person.
Yet with the increased awareness and focus of monitor-flicker, as well as the association of medical concerns, BenQ decided to introduce an array of flicker-free monitors. These are all designed and made to address every user’s concerns regarding eye fatigue and other health issues connected to flickering displays. Plus, these are all based on the Direct-Current backlight system where the PWM or Pulse Width Modulation isn’t utilized.
As a result, the primary cause of monitor flicker is removed, thus, making flicker-free range adequate for you and every other user.
Using the Product
The BenQ EX3501R is a great performer in terms of display and quality. Of all the similar monitors that we’ve tried and tested, this has the best contrast ratio which holds up to 1100 : 1 at maximum brightness. The company maxes out at 336-nits which was really bright during our tests.
If you’re a videographer or photographer, then the EX3501R is surely a great device for you. This is because it provides you with a fine level of detail to the task done; so when it comes to the production of precise colors, the monitor is also at the top of its game. With its reading of 1.40, it surely is the most accurate among its competitors.
The colors it produced are vibrant and beautiful; these also never blew out or turned saturated. With this device, BenQ has again lived up to their reputation when it comes to the production of extremely high-quality and excellent displays.
When we switched on the HDR feature, it revealed a couple of interesting developments in the monitor’s scores. Its color accuracy highly improved to the Delta-E 2.75 on average to exhibit a slightly more precise tone. The mode also included a slightly cooler tint which a few people may appreciate especially for games and movies.
Panel uniformity is great for an ultra-wide type of monitor, and while testing, we didn’t notice any disadvantageous bleeding. The company’s HDR emulation is among the best we’ve tried, plus, another notable feature of the monitor is its exclusive B.I. Plus feature that automatically adjusts the brightness based on your ambient lighting.
While being used, the B.I. helps regulate eye comfort despite multi-hour and continuous gaming sessions. We didn’t really have to adjust the screen during the day and night, so we think that this is really a huge bonus especially for plug-and-play users.
On Screen Display
The menu of the EX3501R’s on-screen display is easy to understand, and the options are not difficult to access. We used the buttons under the monitor’s frame to operate the menu. These buttons were also easy to press so all in all, we didn’t have any problem with this.
The menu has four settings – picture mode, brightness, contrast, and the last one is customizations mode, which is where you’d spend most of your time adjusting its settings.
For picture mode, this allows you to choose from preset options; however, you may also customize your own profile if you want to do so. Aside from the default options, you can also choose from sRGB, HDR, Photo, Gamer 1, 2 & 3, Custom 1, 2, and M-Book. The brightness and contrast options are self-explanatory and these are the easiest to manage.
The customization mode is where you get to play around with the monitor’s display, picture, picture-advanced, and system settings. The display section allows you to choose between input and PIP / PBP (picture-in-picture / picture-by-picture). Input displays whether you are using DP, HDMI, or USB-C.
You can utilize PIP/PBP to separate the screen into two portions so you can see images from various signals.
The Picture Advance settings allow you to tweak the picture mode, low blue light, color vibrance, dynamic contrast, overscan, display mode, super resolution, Brightness Intelligence Plus, HDMI RGB PC range, as well as adjust by duration. Super resolution adds the pixel density of content with low-resolution while Dynamic contrast allows the monitor to adjust the detail and brightness of images automatically.
In the system option, you can adjust the input, OSD settings, DDC / CI, DP Auto Switch, HDMI Auto Switch, CustomKey 1, 2, & 3, USB-C Configuration, USB-C, Auto Switch, Resolution Notice, and more. In information, you will see some basic details including refresh rate, resolution, HDR, input mode, and monitor model.
The EX3501R does a lot of things right – starting with its price which is really aggressive, its impressive size with its ultra-wide aspect ratio plus high resolution makes it a great monitor for Windows, an excellent addition for your games, as well as its 100 Hz refresh rate. The BenQ EX3501R is not a flashy device but it does have all the goods in the places, especially when it comes to its display quality.
It surpasses its competitors in almost every aspect; and although it’s slightly more expensive than other similar devices, the EX3501R from BenQ features HDR support and great gaming features which makes it one monitor that sure earns its price.
This monitor is a thorough UWQ-HD ultra-wide product with good response time; though it isn’t one of the fastest monitors around, it’s one of the best and finely-tuned monitors in the market. When it comes to its price, the EX3501R has a good one since it is able to readily compete with some of the more expensive models that are available today.
Now, would we recommend this monitor? Absolutely, especially if you don’t really bother with fancy features, and prefer having a good wide-range monitor.
